Rolling Stones 500 Best Songs: Pool Boy Redux Version Songs 500-101

When summer started, I had a very peculiar idea to listen to all the songs on the Rolling Stones 500 Best Songs of All Time list (published in Feb. 2024). Now, I've never been one who's aligned with top critics and their musical taste, heck, I don't align with most people's since I'm still listening to sad boi pop punk from 2014. That being said, I approached this list with the understanding that these are considered great pieces of work and that I should respect the process while also respecting the vibes. Then, I had an even wilder idea, ask the boys what they thought of all these supposed important songs and the results were concerning and hilarious at the same time.

I will say that the integrity of these ratings is not fully intact. Asking kids to rate 500 songs is just as tedious as it sounds and they were over after 50. Spread out over a month's time, I hammered them with everything from The Beatles, Daddy Yankee, Bob Dylan, Outkast, John Coltrane, and even Carly Rae Jepsen. It should also be noted that Crosby is a contrarian and tanked most of these songs on his own by handing out the most Fs. All songs I should point out were grade on an A-F scale, then broken down into a GPA style rating system. In the event of a tie, we deferred to the original list, and the highest original rank became the highest ranked song in that range. It should also be pointed out that Crosby loves instrumentals thanks in part to his appreciation of the composer John Williams and thinks that Bob Dylan wouldn't be so bad if he didn't open his big mouth. In order for this to not be overly long (too late), I will speed run songs 500-101 stopping at the milestone rankings to give a breakdown.

Please enjoy this disaster of an experiment that pushed this family to the brink of extinction and included at least 15 mental breakdowns as I pushed them like Serena and Venus Williams' father to finish this list. Also, if you're mad that there is a song by an artist that is not on here ("Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes seems like an oversight), blame the list not us. So, without further ado, here's our list.

*Some of the more profane songs were edited or worked around as to not fully corrupt these delinquent minds.

500. "A&W"-Lana Del Rey

Original Rank: 456

Avg Rating: D-

What Was Said: Ok, we might be off to a hot start, but not a single one of us enjoyed any part of this song. Already, apologies if you love LDR, but she's not passing the vibe check in the Pool house. Also, Crosby asked if most female fronted singers were Taylor Swift, so that seems like something we'll need to address down the road. Finally, why is this song 7 minutes long? No thanks.

What Was Said: I don't mind this song, Max is not a Prince fan at all, and Crosby felt the need to give this one of his many F ratings. That doesn't mean he hates all Prince songs there's one that gets a pretty big boost from him later on.

Original Rank: 441

Average Rating: C-

What Was Said: Crosby gave it an F of course, I have a particular vibe of country I like, and this isn't it, but Max gave it a solid A- to rank it higher than its original ranking. So, it's got that going for it, which is nice.

400. "Son of a Preacher Man"-Dusty Springfield

Original Rank: 168

What Was Said: Crosby did his Crosby thing, Max thought it was mid, but I stood up for this song to keep it from going even lower. Is this song in the movie Now and Then because I probably heard it there first?

376. "Try a Little Tenderness"-Otis Redding (Originally 136)

375. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"

Original Rank: 90

Average Rating: C

What Was Said: Ok, so when does someone begin to appreciate the emotion that is being pumped out of a song? Obviously, 10 and 7 are not those ages. Aretha Franklin's "Respect" was the original number one on this list and when Crosby gave that song an F, I knew we were in for a bumpy ride.

374. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"-James Brown (Originally 34)

373. "Runaway"-Kanye West (Originally 25)

351. "Pusherman"-Curtis Mayfield (Originally 261)

350. "Nothing Compares 2 U"-Sinead O'Connor
Original Rank: 184

Average Rating: C+

What Was Said: While this is not my favorite song ever, I do appreciate that she is giving everything on a song originally done by Prince. Max is actually the biggest outlier here, giving it a C-, but remember, he doesn't have the context of this music video, and also, her controversial appearance on SNL bouncing around in his nostalgia brain.

349. "The Sound of Silence"-Simon and Garfunkel (Originally 182)

348. "Comfortably Numb"-Pink Floyd (Originally 179)

347. "Pink Moon"-Nick Drake (Originally 162)

326. "Crazy"-Patsy Cline (Originally 195)

325. "F* tha Police"-N.W.A.
Original Rank: 190

Average Rating: C+

What Was Said: As I noted, there were some songs that we did not listen to all the way. I'd say in total it was about 5 seconds of this song. Max gave it an automatic F. Crosby gave it an A+. Again, we did not listen to but .001% of this song. It's not in my top 3 for N.W.A songs, so it's alright. I understand their viewpoint, but I'm also not driving down High Street blasting it with the windows down either.

324. "I Say a Little Prayer"-Aretha Franklin (Originally 117)

323. "You Oughta Know"-Alanis Morissette (Originally 103)

301. "Young Americans"-David Bowie (Originally 204)

300. "I'll Take You There"-The Staple Singers
Original Rank: 186

Average Rating: C+

What Was Said: At this point, everyone had reached a breaking point and were just trying to get through, so not much was actually said. Crosby gave it a C, I gave an A-, and Max was the big hater at a C-, but overall, it survived the wrath of angry children being forced to finish something.

299. "Blueberry Hill"-Fats Domino (Originally 147)

298. "People Get Ready"-The Impressions (Originally 122)

275. "Hold on We're Going Home"-Drake (feat. Majid Jordan)

Original Rank: 129

Average Rating: B-

What was Said: Look, I understand that Drake can be divisive to some people, but I think this is his most accessible song. This is a great song to vibe in headphones with. Max slightly agreed, giving it a B-, while Crosby again tanked most song ratings by giving it a D.

274. "Tangled Up in Blue"-Bob Dylan (Originally 67)

273. "When Doves Cry"-Prince (Originally 37)

250. "Little Red Corvette"-Prince

Original Rank: 360

Average Rating: B-

What Was Said: To me, this is top tier Prince and Max agreed. Then Crosby's defiant gene activated and he gave it a D-. Probably inspired by his mother, who continually says that this is just Raspberry Beret in disguise.

What Was Said: This song inspired Crosby's formed opinion that Bob Dylan music is great, but Bob Dylan singing is not. Honestly, I'm not sure he's all that wrong. This list alone has at least two covers of his songs. Personally, I would've had "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix much higher, but these kids don't appreciate a strong guitar solo. Also, no surprise, but there is a lot of Bob Dylan on this list.

What Was Said: Honestly, I forgot what this song was and that's probably why I gave this a B-. It doesn't really move the needle for me, but the boys seemed to enjoy it. I did want to point out that the song above this (Leader of the Pack) is there because they made motorcycle noises, so really there's no rhyme or reason to this list.

What Was Said: As I stated, sometimes Dylan writes really good songs for other people. This was literally released a month after Dylan dropped his version. The boys each gave it an A-, so I'm the problem this time, because I prefer the Roark version, which no one, even Roark, has said.

What Was Said: The boys both gave this song an A+. I'll admit it's catchy, but 101 is crazy. That's what happens when numbers do the talking.

If you made it this far, stay tuned for the Top 100.
